Madrid, October 2010- faithful to its commitment to the health and well-being of all, Sanitas has initiated action to cooperate with UNICEF in its struggle for the eradication of malaria. An initiative with which company invites customers to stop receiving the extract on paper and consult it online.

The cost of these quarterly extracts is 1.80 euros per customer, an amount that Sanitas is committed to donate fully to the United Nations. This figure multiplied by all those who join the initiative, will help to protect many children and their families against malaria.

With this money the company will contribute to the purchase of specially treated nets with insecticide of long duration, the best tool to protect families against the massive spread of this disease. Malaria causes more than one million deaths per year, of which 80% are children under the age of 5 years, according to UNICEF. It is an endemic disease caused by parasites which are transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes that bite between dusk and dawn, hence the importance of sleep covered by nets.

UNICEF carried out for years a programme of prevention of this disease, which includes in addition to the provision of mosquito nets impregnated with insecticides, whose effectiveness is maintained between 3 and 5 years of other actions as the implementation of campaigns to disseminate among the efficient use of these nets, and fumigation, every time, of the interior of the houses.

Thanks to this initiative, Sanitas, customers as well as collaborating with the solidarity program, will benefit from the advantages of consult extract form online. In this way will remain with information received on paper, such as health care news and advice on health. They will also have access, provided that they wish, to the history of your receipts and can comfortably check visits to the doctor.

In addition, in March of this year Sanitas developed a solidarity campaign with Haiti, in collaboration with UNICEF, for the creation of projects for the prevention and treatment of childhood diseases. With a single click of mouse, Sanitas made a donation on behalf of their clients to UNICEF and the total amount, which was 50,000 euros, went to the distribution of supplies of necessities, measles vaccination days, time to respond to diarrhoeal diseases health centres, respiratory infections and malaria, and the distribution of first-aid kits.

Such projects are part of the volunteering activities Sanitas organizes each year in collaboration with its customers.
