BMW and Toyota to develop batteries for electric cars: sources

MUNICH (Reuters) – the automotive German BMW and its Japanese rival Toyota Motor plan to cooperate in investigations to develop cars electric, lithium-ion batteries told Reuters on Thursday, a source familiar with the topic.

In addition, over the weekend reported that both companies were in negotiations for a society to develop “green” cars. BMW would bring to the Japanese firm engines diesel.

It is expected that the two companies announce cooperation during a joint press conference scheduled for the 0700 Thursday in Tokyo, said the source.

Ni BMW or Toyota wanted to speak on the subject.

Bas Akio Toyoda, who became CEO in mid-2009, Toyota has forged partnerships with a number of companies, which include Microsoft, Salesforce.com, Tesla and Ford Motor Co. to jointly develop vans hybrids.

Earlier Tuesday, Toyota introduced a hybrid Prius which is loaded with a plug, with lithium-ion batteries high capacity.

The presentation was made before the Tokyo Motor Show and the model is promoted as the “green” car more practical in the world.

Electric cars usually sold twice what sells a conventional car that uses an engine combustion, so researchers are looking for ways that your batteries are lighter and that vehicles are less expensive.

NASA performs more than 200 experiments to extinguish fires in space

Washington, 28 nov (EFE).-A fire in the space can be one even bigger problem than in the Earth, where with a little water and chemicals can suppress, why NASA today celebrates 200 experiments who since 2009 has been made with the program FLEX.

FLEX is due to the abbreviation of the proposed experiment extinction Llamas, whose objective is to better understand the foundations of the flames in gravity zero and the best way to extinguish a fire in the space.

Away from the gravitational, where there is the concept of up and down, the flames behave in unconventional ways and when the astronauts are subject to live in an area reduced as the international space station know put out a fire quickly however small can be a matter of life and death, says NASA.

When a flame burns on Earth, hot gases rise creating a floating flow which attracts oxygen to the flame and produced the combustion, but space hot gases do not rise and molecular dissemination promotes fire behavior.

“We hope get a better understanding of the burning, improving fire safety on ships and ideas for a more efficient utilization of liquid in Earth fuels,” said lead researcher FLEX Forman Williams of the University of California at San Diego.

La NASA stresses that as better awareness the physical principles of combustion in space, you can control and designing the processes of energy efficient.

I Express heads of service of internal medicine.

Manifesto heads of service of internal medicine.

Spain, November 2011- The heads of service of internal medicine, that relate in this document, before the demonstrations by certain health authorities in connection with the Decree on core subjects and new medical specialties, wish to communicate the following:

1. Spain is by far the largest number of medical specialties-European country, therefore they would have to be very powerful and justified reasons to proceed with the recognition of new medical specialties, and thus move away, if possible, European reality.

2. A greater number of specialties is not synonymous with quality, and always carries entail a fragmentation of knowledge and health care, an increase in the costs and problems of viability and equity. It also means a greater number of visits per year to specialties different for each patient, with harmful effects for the health of patients and the economy of the system.

3. In recent years, we are witnessing a change in the need of health care for chronic disease pandemic. Many people suffer from many of these diseases for many years. These patients need professionals able to respond to all of them in a comprehensive manner. In relation to this, long time we have been expressing the need to adapt the training programs of the medical specialties to the health needs and the profile of current patients. This was the origin of the project’s core subjects which we have always defended.

4. Our services are a vertebral axis of healthcare for medical diseases in Spain, being responsible for 16% of hospital discharges, are represented in all types of hospitals and committed to the efficiency of the health system, quality and medical teaching.

5. Our specialty has been fundamental in addressing health care problems over the past decades such as medical emergencies, chronic diseases, pluripatológicos patients, HIV infection, or imported diseases.

6. The health care needs of high specificity which, undoubtedly, they exist because of the growing complexity of medical practice, they have their place and a framework in the Management Act of health professions with the recognition of areas of specific training which is to develop for years. Within them it may also include the areas of training of emergency and infectious diseases, thus recognizing the effort, dedication and contribution of value of multiple professionals from internal medicine and other medical specialties.

7. The Spanish society of internal medicine (SEMI) and the national specialty Committee have presented many grounded allegations, both form and substance, to the drafts of decrees of core subjects and new medical specialties. Us is unacceptable behaviour of certain health authorities that are answering in public allegations of other professional groups unless the Ministry has replied in writing to our allegations, following the channels established for this, with a clear lack of transparency and respect.

8. Decisions on health policy should solve problems without creating larger ones, and any approach to changing the educational system in medicine at the current stage of political uncertainty, economic crisis, and lack of consensus among scientific societies, must take into consideration the impact thereof.

9 We believe that the essential changes in the rearrangement of the specialized medical supply must obey the appearance again knowledge, substantial changes in the organisation of health systems or consolidated pressing needs of the assisted population and tend to synthesize, more flexible and give permeability to posgraduada training system. None of these situations can be seen in the decisions that we are claiming that they arise by corporate pressures and Union threats.

For all these reasons we oppose strongly the adoption of new medical specialties in Spain.

Its adoption would lead to the modification of existing portfolios of our clinical services, the training programs of our specialty, the reorganization of the health centres, and would require the negotiation of the possible double degrees of specialists, the reorganization in the supply of school places, and the definition of medico-legal responsibilities. All this without substantial evidence that will improve the quality of care or is going to facilitate the sustainability of the health system.

In such circumstances we would have to reconsider our support for the Decree and the introduction of the draft of core subjects in Spanish teaching hospitals.

120 specialists live attended a hip Arthroscopy directed by Dr. Ángel Villamor hospital USP San Jose to treat shock femoroacetabular.

-shock femoroacetabular is described at the end of the 20th century which affects 15% of the population and is the first cause of arthrosis of hip in young patients

-surgery is favoured in the framework of the III Master Class Nycomed to hip arthroscopic surgery organized in San José USP Hospital

Madrid, November 2011- El Dr. Ángel Villamor, Director of the unit of trauma and recovery advanced at the Hospital USP San Jose and Medical Director of the clinical iQtra, conducted last Friday, 18 November, a hip Arthroscopy to treat shock femoroacetabular in a young patient. Surgery attended live from the same premises of the 120 Hospital specialists in Traumatology and orthopedic surgery from all Spain.

In surgery, Dr. Villamor was accompanied by the Dr. Dean k. Matsuda (Los Angeles, USA), one of the leading specialists in the boarding by Arthroscopy of this pathology.

Femoroacetabular clash was described at the end of the 20th century but has not treated properly until the early years of this century and affects 15% of the population, constituting the first cause of arthrosis of hip in young patients. It is estimated that early diagnosis could prevent 70% of the hip prosthesis which are implemented to patients of less than 50 years.

Retransmission of the surgery has taken place in the framework of the III Master Class Nycomed on hip arthroscopic surgery which this year hosted the Hospital USP San Jose in Madrid.

Increases the resistance to the antibiotics used as a last resort against Multiresistant bacteria.

Increases the resistance to the antibiotics used as a last resort against Multiresistant bacteria.

on 18 November is celebrated the European day to use prudent of the antibiotics.

-containment of resistance to antibiotics must involve citizens, health personnel and authorities

-the ECDC in Stockholm estimated that in Europe more than 25,000 patients die each year by Multiresistant bacteria to antibiotics

-incorrect antibiotic treatment increases the patient’s hospital stay, which is in Europe an estimated more than 1.5 billion euros spending a year

Madrid, November of 2011- the Spanish society of infectious diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), on the occasion of European day for the prudent use of antibiotics on 18 NovemberIt focuses on the importance of using this type of medication properly, so in this way bacteria become resistant to antibiotics are no longer be effective.

This day, promoted and coordinated by the European Centre for the prevention and the Control of diseases (ECDC) since 2008, it aims to publicize the threat posed to European citizens make improper or incorrect use of antibiotics. Resistance to antibiotics is a public health issue that threatens to those patients who need or will need antibiotics in critical situations for their health.

It is of vital importance that the population make a responsible use of antibiotics and to strictly follow the medical prescription. Take recommended doses, the indicated hours and days laid down by the doctor or the risk of favouring the increase in resistance.

Last line antibiotic resistance

One of the main problems in relation to resistant bacteria is the increase in antibiotic resistance of last line, i.e., those that are considered as the last option available for the treatment of the infection. For this reason, this year the European day for the prudent use of antibiotics is intended raise awareness of this situation, it only seriously treatment options in serious patients infected by Multiresistant bacteria, those resistant to three or more families of antibiotics.

Only antibiotics that can be used in these cases are often older antibiotics that were developed decades ago and whose use was limited due to side effects. Dr. Jesus Oteo, Member of the SEIMC and researcher of the laboratory of antibiotics of the national centre of Microbiology, warns “ must be aware that the number of new antibiotics research is scarce. If problems of resistance continue at the current pace, we could face a situation similar to the pre-antibiótica era in which there was no appropriate treatment for bacterial infections ”.

For example, the antibiotic carbapenémicos, used as a last possibility of treatment in many infections are one of the most effective families against bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

However, resistance to these antibiotics in k. pneumoniae, a bacteria that causes pneumonia and infections in patients hospitalized in intensive care units and in infants, has experienced a strong increase in some surrounding countries as Greece (from 27.8% in 2005 to 43.5% in 2009), (1) and in Spain major hospital outbreaks caused by this type of bacteria have been detected. In p. aeruginosa bacterium that infects wounds, pulmonary tract, urinary tract and causes infections in the blood, resistance affected 22% of strains in 2010. In Spain, this figure increased from 15.6% in 2006 to 20.6% in 2010.

Importance of prudent use of antibiotics

It is estimated that in Europe more than 25,000 patients die each year by Multiresistant bacteria. Dr. Oteo comments “ we’re running out of effective antibiotics because of the rapid progression of the resistance, and this progression occurs largely by its misuse. A prudent administration of antibiotics can help stop the development of resistant bacteria and help that they continue to be effective in the future ”.

Treatment with antibiotics inadequate and the delay in the administration of an appropriate treatment in patients with severe infections, is related with a worse clinical evolution and, occasionally, death. In addition, incorrect antibiotic treatment also influences an increase in the patient’s hospital stay. Annual costs for extension of stay and lost productivity for this reason is estimated at more than 1.5 billion euros in Europe.(2)

Spain, among the most affected countries

the most recent data confirm that the number of patients infected by resistant bacteria is growing at an alarming rate in the European Union, and in particular in our country

According to experts from the SEIMC, Escherichia coli, bacteria responsible for extraintestinales and intestinal infections in severe cases, has increased their resistance considerably in recent years in Spain. The multiresistance in this bacterium has doubled over the past decade, from 12 per cent in 2001 to 25% in 2010.i
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most frequent human pathogens, common cause of infections of skin, soft tissues, surgical infections and pneumonia, among others. 25% Of the total number of blood infections caused by S. aureus in 2010 in Spain produced by Methicillin-resistant bacteria. This figure contrasts with the rates of resistance that occur in other European countries, such as the Netherlands (1.2%) and Norway (0.6%).

About antibiotics

Antibiotics are a type of medicine that can kill bacteria or inhibit their growth and thus to cure infections. Antibiotics do not cure infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or the flu, are only effective to combat bacterial infections. The correct diagnosis and the decision as to the necessity of antibiotics are the responsibility exclusively of physicians, therefore be always follow the instructions of the doctor and take antibiotics how and when he says so.

It is said that a bacterium has developed resistance when a specific antibiotic loses its ability to eliminate or to stop its growth. Resistant bacteria survive in the presence of the antibiotic and continue to multiply, prolonging the disease and even causing death.

Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics accelerates the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria. They can spread and cause infections to others who have not taken any antibiotics. Resistant bacteria could become immune from any known antibiotic.

SEIMC

The Spanish society of infectious diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC) is a scientific society that brings together professionals working in the field of Infectious Pathology, both from a clinical point of view the etiologic diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious processes.

The fundamental purpose of the SEIMC is the promote, encourage and disseminate the study and research of infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, in terms of epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control is concerned, as well as in their interrelations.

Currently with more than 2,600 partners, more than 1,500 correspond to the section of clinical microbiology and about 1,150 to infectious diseases.
