Brussels, 9 sep (EFE).-the European Union (EU) has decided today to extend at least until the end of the year the special controls to imported foods from Japan areas potentially affected by the catastrophe of nuclear station Fukushima.

The twenty-seven have backed a proposal from the European Commission (EC) to maintain for three months, until 31 December – the measures adopted on 24 March, measures that will continue to be revised each month.

Thus, products from 12 Japanese prefectures continue passing radioactivity tests before leaving the country ran up while being subject to controls reinforced in the EU, with analysis of at least 10 percent of shipments.

Products originating in the other 35 prefectures of Japan will have to be accompanied by a statement specifying its origin, although they also continue to pass tests extraordinary, with at least 20 percent of imports tested in laboratories.

The Executive community, anyway, stressed today that the food risks arising from the nuclear accident of Fukushima are considerably “low in the EU”.
