Fibromyalgia can be fought in primary care with psychoeducation and relaxation.

the Group of research GRAPISAM of the Institute for research in primary care, IDIAP Jordi Gol, is conducting a study on the treatment of fibromyalgia in the perspective psicoeductiva.

-consultations for Fibromyalgia are between 5 and 8% of consultations in primary care

-the typical patient is a woman, about 55 years old, married, who lives with the couple and the children, with primary school, home or stop housewife

-intervention multicomponent (education and relaxation sessions) to treat Fibromyalgia is more effective than (mainly drug) treatment as usual

Spain, December of 2011- the study, FiBROQOL, took patients from primary care centres of Gavà (CAP Bartomeu Fabrés and Anglada) and Viladecans (CAP Maria Bernades) (Barcelona) diagnosed fibromyalgia. The objective was to ascertain if a lasting two months multicomponent intervention improved functional status of patients with fibromyalgia.

216 Patients participated in the project, and form random 108 became the group control and 108 the intervention group. The latter treated the multicomponent consisting of 9 weekly sessions of 2 hours (5 sessions of psychoeducation) and 4 sessions of relaxation. The patients were assessed before and after the intervention based on different parameters sociodemographic, medical Comorbidities, functional status and anxiety.

The sessions were organized in groups of 18 patients and heading them primary care physicians of the own CAPs, a rheumatologist of the area and a clinical psychologist, the latter focused on sessions of relaxation.

Content educational session

In educational sessions spoke of the typical symptoms of fibromyalgia, medical conditions of co-morbidity factors influence psychosocial pain, pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments, and the benefits of exercise on a regular basis. While the sessions of relaxation was a clinical psychologist were directed to increase the control of the pain of patients through auto-relajación physical and mental exercises.

Results

According to the researchers of the study, “the results show a specific improvement in patients who participated in the intervention group in physical function, best elsentir, pain and fatigue, muscle larigidesa, and the anxiety and depression”.

In Spain the prevalence of fibromyalgia is situated between 2.4% and 2.7% of the general population. Although it occurs at all ages, there is a maximum prevalence between 40 and 49 years old.

It is a common disease in clinical practice, which is between 10-20% of consultations in rheumatology, between 5-8% of the primary health care, and is the most common cause of widespread and chronic musculoskeletal pain.
