Spain, March 2012.- during the last 4 years the Hospital Clínico San Carlos has reduced its emissions of GHG in 1.613 tonnes of CO2, and over the past year has reduced them 6%, following the Kyoto Protocol emission reduction policy, as is reflected in the corresponding audits.

On the other hand, this Hospital has been revalidated the certification of the environmental management system in accordance with the UN EN ISO 14001 standard and the regulation EMAS (Community environmental audit and management system), where is registered since 2003, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the environment through environmental improvements in recent years with the involvement of their workers.

Also produced annually, its environmental statement that channelled through the Ministry of environment and the Ministry of environment, in order to make it reach the European Union. That statement is validated by AENOR prior to its publication and in it the Hospital reports on its environmental performance.

A referral hospital in the respect for the environment

Clinician generates a number of waste similar to those produced by a population of approximately of 3,700 inhabitants (1.5 kg/citizen/day) and about six kilos of waste by inpatient / day average. Facing this challenge, the Hospital remains a process Protocol and secure, ensuring at all times the correct collection, segregation and transport of waste treatment plants.

With the implementation of plans of substitution of reactive hazardous to the environment by others are not, has reduced chemical waste produced since 2008 by 64 per cent, representing a cost savings direct to the Centre of about 100,000 euros a year.

These achievements are the result of the policy carried out by the unit of environmental management of the clinical directed by Manuel Carmona Calvo, through environmental improvement programmes put into operation and has managed to reduce the last year 2011 3.5% the consumption of water, 5% the consumption of natural gas and 6% the tons of CO2 emitted.

It has also diverted circuit of landfill for recycling 460,000 kilos of materials, which means 32% of urban waste, with an increase in the recycling of 15% over the previous year.

In the year 2011 launched the campaign zero mercury, offering to the staff of the Centre, until exhausted stocks, the possibility of replacing their old mercury thermometers completely free with new ones free of this substance. The Centre had already carried out change of these devices in clinical use by other free of this poison.

Environmental policy Awards

This environmental policy of Clínico San Carlos has been recognized by various agencies and thus has several awards: the economic newspaper expansion and Garrigues environment granted the prize to the best institutional initiative of environmental urban and Industrial, thereby acknowledging the brilliant career of this health centre in the field of environmental management. Also in 2008, the Spanish Association for standardisation and certification (AENOR), in the sustainability summit, held in Zaragoza, given public recognition to continuous improvement in environmentally responsible management.
