Focus on heart failure and kidney disease

Heart failure (CI) is a disease of far-reaching socio-health. Its poor prognosis, with high mortality rates (in some cases even exceeding some malignant tumors) and morbidity (with numerous and costly hospitalizations), as well as the progressive increase in its incidence make this pathology is one of the most important health problems today.

The role of the doctor of AP, in close coordination with the specialist in cardiology and internal medicine, is essential for proper management of the IC that allows to reduce the current morbidity and mortality of this syndrome, as well as to improve the quality of life of patients. Therefore considered that the family doctor should be increasingly involved in tackling this disease, in collaboration with professionals from other levels of care.

To try to reduce the incidence of the IC in the population and the high mortality that goes with, it is essential to know better the distribution, frequency and determinants of disease in our environment, with special attention to the causal modifiable risk factors, co-morbidity, medicalization and social situation of patients; that is why it is intended to carry out a descriptive cross-sectional and multicenter study (1st phase) and cohort (2nd phase) to answer these questions.

For its part, la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) is a public health problem of the first magnitude in developed societies due to the progressive increase of its prevalence (especially in the terminal phase) and its linkage with a greater morbidity and mortality (above all, cardiovascular). However, the ERC is still a below-diagnosed and below-treated disease in all levels of care, which means a missed opportunity for prevention.

The proper control of the main risk factors for the ERC (diabetes, hypertension), early diagnosis and the polifarmacia are some of the main lines of work of the Chair in the scope of this disease.
