-The number of patients is the largest in Spain and is among the more outstanding 8 internationally

Spain, November 2011- La Técnica Sugarbaker applies in the Hospital of Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi since its opening, and is indicated for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The program of Peritoneal Carcinomatosis in Catalonia (PCPC), coordinated by Dr. Pedro Barrios, has treated 250 patients since its inception in 2006, and is backed by the Plan Director of Oncology.

This figure is the largest series of patients in the whole Spain and among the 8 most important international series. Peritoneal carcinomatosis originating in tumors of colon, rectum, Appendix, small intestine, stomach and ovary, corresponds to neoplastic disease stages, and are often associated with poor quality of life of patients and very limited in time survivals.

The figures of the practice of this technique are that a year of treatment, 90.9 per cent of patients live, and half of the patients live still after 44 months. The technique applied in patients with pseudomyxoma peritonal and peritoneal malignant mesothelioma has achieved the highest survivals of 75 per cent and 64 per cent respectively, after 6 years and live in carcinomatosis for colorectal origin, 42% of patients after 3 years of treatment.

Health agencies such as the NICE (United Kingdom), CËPO (Canada) and AATRM (Catalonia) recommended that given the technical complexity, the treatment only is carried out in specialized centres which attest to the expertise and capacity and to ensure a rigorous selection of patients, as well as a continuous assessment of results. Catalonia is one of the four regions containing this radical treatment of the carcinoamtosis in their national health plans. Currently, there are 11 centres as part of the group Spanish Peritoneal cancer surgery (GECOP) who practise technical d Sugarbaker in Spain
