The RACE supports the vision zero as a strategy to continue the decline in deaths on the road.

la vision zero is based on the idea that anyone should die from a road accident.

-The starting point of the vision zero is the ethical principle that no one should die or be injured for life on the road

-Sweden experience allows to join the road safety strategy to other groups in commitment to improve road safety, as vehicles, roads, education …

-the RACE considers that, following the implementation of legal measures in Spain in recent years, is should impel driver training, the conservation of roads, and mobile technologies to improve safety and mobility

Madrid, February 2012.- in the year 1997 the Swedish Parliament adopted the vision zero as the basis for all work related road safety in Sweden. Its basic principle is that no one should die on the road by a sinister, and that any death is acceptable when we talk about road accident. To this end, work on infrastructure, vehicle safety, human factors, and legislative actions that have reduced the accident rate in the Nordic country have been launched. Since the RACE we consider that this type of policies and strategies could promote the reduction of accidents and injuries in Spain.

In 1995 was introduced the concept of vision zero in Sweden, being adopted by Parliament two years later as the main strategy to reduce the sinister vials. The starting point of vision zero, and that RACE shared, is the ethical principle that no one should die or be injured for life on the road. The only acceptable number of killed or seriously injured on the roads is therefore zero. This concept, born in Sweden, has led to a new way of understanding the concept of prevention of traffic accidents, and from RACE, we think that you can set an example for the challenges posed by this new period of work in road safety.

Spain experience has shown in recent years that it is possible to reduce road accidents are coordinated efforts and works from different areas. We can not be satisfied with data of accidents that occur in our country, and we must put all the resources available to achieve the reduction of accidents.

This is precisely one of the elements that stand out in the vision zero, where they work on the characteristics of the human being, the responsibility, the need to base actions on scientific facts and that different parts which constitute the system of roads and transport together and depend on each other.

Spain, over the past years, they have been action legal far-reaching, as the driving licence points, the reform of the Penal Code or sanctioning procedure, who have helped improve safety on the roads. We believe the RACE exceeded once this first stage, there to work in more specific groups, and add messages and efforts from other areas, such as occupational risk prevention, training and driver education, among other actions.

The result in Sweden

Since 1997, the Swedish Road Administration makes in-depth studies of all accidents in traffic, in order to investigate how the fatal injuries could occur. In this sense, data shows the progress that has occurred in the reduction of the dead by road accidents. During the year 2009 there were 355 who died as a result of a road accident in Sweden, down to 266 in the year 2010 (in Spain, in 2010, there were deceased 2.478). The ratio per capita by the year 2010 was 28 killed by traffic accidents per million inhabitants, compared to 54 deaths per million inhabitants in Spain.
