Madrid, March of 2013.- in order to facilitate the continuing education of specialists of the medical laboratory, the Spanish society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology (SEQC)Returns to make use, for the second consecutive year of the Moodle platform to manage their distance learning courses. This virtual and interactive platform specially adapted training, is used as an educational tool in a multitude of organisms, such as public schools, universities and scientific societies. “

This tool is very useful in the field of education since, in addition to enabling the interaction between users, it allows to know the evolution and development of courses and the level of satisfaction of students” explains Dr. Manuel Rodríguez Espinosa, recently named new President of the Committee of education of the SEQC.

Participants enrolled in the program this year, which mostly come from Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid, already above 900. In addition, thanks to the virtual nature of Moodle, have been incorporated also professionals from Portugal, France, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Andorra, and Mexico.

In terms of the profile of students, it is worth mentioning that only 20% are specialists in training. The vast majority of the participants (73%) work in the hospital setting and 48% in laboratories of large size (more than 500 samples per day).

Training in the clinical laboratory

Dr. Manuel Rodríguez Espinosa points out that the main objectives of the Education Committee of the SEQC in this new phase are to continue with the program of continuous training of the SEQC and assume the new responsibilities entrusted to us the address of the company. To do this, using the Moodle platform, we have designed a program of clinical cases, of which soon will publish the pilot case. The same registration will remain open until March 21, 2013. On the other hand, have already started to coordinate the courses proposed by the different committees and commissions of the SEQC ”.

The training course consists of nine subjects which, in turn, pose a specific clinical case on which students can discuss in the forum for discussion of the platform. It is the training Committee of the SEQC who choose the topics, trying to accommodate the various disciplines that comprise the medical laboratory. It also includes both technical and clinical aspects, whether news or reviews. Each topic is also associated with an evaluation questionnaire that students can only access during the month in which the Unit develops. To overcome it, you must get a minimum percentage of hits.

Dr. Manuel Rodríguez Espinosa, President of the Committee of education of the SEQC.

One of the advantages of this platform is that it promotes the interaction of students, either through the Forum or through private messaging service available to Moodle. This interaction can be established both among students and between students, teachers, and organizers ”, explains Dr. Rodríguez Espinosa.

In addition to being an important tool for discussion and communication, the Forum is a useful resource to make suggestions, share ideas and get feedback. In this sense, also the satisfaction survey which integrates the platform provides the opportunity to assess the various aspects of the course, which takes advantage from the training Committee to identify possible shortcomings and thus allowing the improvement of the new editions of each course and the integration of issues of greater interest.

Based on this poll, “the most valued aspects last year were today and interest of the subject (valued with a 4.27 a maximum of 5), and the level of knowledge of the authors (valued with a 4.17 of a maximum of 5), regardless of their specialty”, recalls Dr. Rodríguez Espinosa.
