Alzira, January 2013.- the Department of health of the Hospital de La Ribera has been consolidated in 2012 as a reference in the field of Mental health through the national award to the best case report received during the XIV National Conference held in Madrid by the Spanish societyNOLA Dual pathology, and the prestigious prize Best in Class awarded his hands of the specialized publication Gazette medical hospital psychiatry service.

Dual pathology national award jury awarded last month of October the clinical case entitled Trigeminalepsia: a differential sensitive exposed in Dual pathology, which analysed the treatment followed with a patient who has overcome, after 20 years, a problem of suicidal behavior combined with alcohol abuse.

This case, presented by Dr. Carlos Miró, psychiatrist of La Ribera, opted to this renowned award along with other 70 cases finalists presented by prestigious health centres in all Spain, as the Hospital Universitario Vall d ’ Hebron in Barcelona, Fundación Jiménez Díaz de Madrid or the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío de Sevilla. In addition, this case has recently attracted the interest of the prestigious international publication of a scientific Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

The work exposed by Dr. Miró explains the case of a patient who presented a neuralgia process characterized by strong headaches and recurrent depression. To do this, professionals in the Mental health of the Bank unit modified diagnosis since they suspected that they were facing a case of Dual pathology.

The dual pathology is a disease in which there is simultaneously a conduct of dependence on alcohol or other drugs and a psychopathological disorder, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia or psychosis.

This change in the diagnosis resulted in La Ribera specialists chose a completely different than the initial treatment based on two key aspects: on the one hand, bet on a new pharmacological therapy; and on the other, they opted for a multidisciplinary care in which participate professionals in Psychiatry, psychologists in addictive behaviors (U.C.A.), neurologists and neurosurgeons units, so that they could address the problems of alcoholism, depression and epilepsy jointly. This new approach and approach of both pathologies has achieved that after 20 years, the patient has completely overcome its problem of dual pathology.

In this sense, in his lecture Dr. Miró analyzed the duality of the present in this patient pathologies and how this simultaneity makes it difficult to diagnosis, modifying therapeutic developments on many occasions and worsen the prognosis.

In this particular case, explains Miró, to opt for a comprehensive approach to the case, attending simultaneously the two diseases that the patient presented have managed one improves the other. It has been shown that if two pathologies can be dealt with at the same time the results are much better, both for addictive behavior and mental disorder”.
