san Juan, 13 feb (EFE).-the leader of the environmentalist group Casa Pueblo, Arturo Massol, said today that the Government of Puerto Rico “is defeated,” with its plan to build the gas pipeline “Via Verde”, which will pass through the Caribbean island North.

Massol said at press conference to add details on the March “Puerto Rico, firm against the gas pipeline”, which will take place next Sunday, that the draft carefully against forests, rivers and communities.

“The people is very clear.” We do not want a pipeline, which endangers the forests, rivers, and communities. The Government is handling everything in the dark of Puerto Rico. “It is a victorious struggle, and that the Government is aware that it is defeated”, said Massol.

The March, which will begin in Parliament and will tour several streets of old San Juan, will culminate La Fortaleza or the Executive Headquarters.

To the demonstration have called for groups community, environmental, Trade Union, professionals, scientists, and others, to ask for the suspension of the project.

“Lack of values that has the Government, see them on Sunday with all movements,” said Massol.

Furthermore, the Toabajeños spokesman in against the pipeline, Juan Camacho, demanded Fortuño to be “firm decisions” and mentioned some ideas to stop the construction, such as the cessation of the expropriations and reappropriated contracts.

“Every day there is an abuse of the Government against all sectors”, assured.

Environmental groups on the island have denounced that the nearly 150 kilometres of pipes projected in 13 municipalities place mostly on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, a sandy terrain prone to mudslides.

Estimated that more than 200,000 people would be exposed to accidents as a result of the escape of gas in the event of a breakdown.

Pipeline allows, according to the plans of the Government, that 71 per cent of the electricity on the island in December 2014 is generated by natural gas, 12 percent by oil and the rest through renewable sources.

United States Environmental Protection Agency.UU. (EPA) approved conditionally, in 2011, the construction of the pipeline, which must contain a plan against environmental impacts and monitoring of the process by independent professionals.
