Tranquilizers with alcohol to intoxicate the brain.

-increase in accidents and other consequences for the sum of both substances

Spain, February 2013.- The latest epidemiological data on drug use, published by the Ministry of health, highlights that increases the consumption of tranquilizers and confirms the high number of people who make binge eating ” drink. The main conclusions are that it descends the consumption of tobacco and illicit drugs and that, for the majority of illegal drugs, the consumption figures are minimal. “However there is an alarming rise in the consumption of pills tranquilizers and sleeping, and commits another alarming fact, that was already evident in previous household survey, is the high proportion of men that make binge eating ” drink”.

This situation, Dr. Josep guard Serecigni, Member of the Board of the scientific society SOCIDROGALCOHOL, indicates “since most people who take these tranquilizers, are also alcoholic beverages, adds the effect of both substances, producing a greater impact of intoxication on the brain. Therefore, these people have an increased risk of accidents, falls, injuries, conflicts with others, alterations in behavior and overdose”.

The binge eating ” drink are a consumption pattern of risk of alcohol which consists of swallowing a large amount of alcohol in a short time (5 or more drinks for a man, 4 or more for a woman, in 2 hours).

“This way of drinking, indicates Dr. Guardia, produces a high concentration of alcohol in the body and therefore also in the brain. The effect of a large amount of alcohol on the brain is a State of acute alcohol intoxication, which manifests itself in the form of a drunk ” that may be more or less intense, but which clearly increases the risk of accidents (traffic, industrial and domestic), falls”, injuries, interpersonal conflicts, arguments, fights, assaults and other incidents, caused by the intoxicated person, but that often victimize others and above all people who live with the intoxicated person.”

Among the most relevant data from the household survey produced by the National Plan on drugs:

-in Spain, 40% of men and 20% of women between 15 and 34 years of age, will have drunk once in the last 12 months.

– between 20% and 35% of menbetween 15 and 44 years of age, make binge eating ” drink (take 5 drinks of alcohol content in 2 hours).

– increases the consumption of tranquilizers, which is higher in women, especially in women over the age of 45 years (21%) and 55 years (27%).

-most people who consume drugs or tranquilizers medications also consume alcohola pattern of use of risk or both substances poliabuso.

-citizens know some risks of illegal drug and tobacco consumption, but are unaware of the risks assumed by a person who makes binge eating ” drink or tranquilizers medications or making a poliabuso of alcohol and tranquilizers.

Both alcohol and tranquilizers produced an immediate effect of slowing of the brain and, therefore, interfere with the proper functioning of the brain. Some people who suffer from anxiety or insomnia may resort to drinking alcohol or taking medication tranquilizers or sleeping. However, a few hours after drinking (alcohol) or taking a tranquilizer (or Tablet) for sleep typically produce an effect of bounce ” symptoms of anxiety or insomnia, i.e. that reappears the same symptom, but with greater intensity that earlier, which can enter into a spiral of progressive worsening of their anxiety or sleep disorder.

Benzodiazepines, (which are the Group of tranquilizers and hypnotics more consumed) can impair the coordination of movements and increase the risk of accidents, falls and injuries, especially in older people. They can also worsen the breathing during sleep, impaired concentration, memory and learning capabilities. In addition, can produce an effect of tolerance ” which leads to a gradual increase of the dose, bounce ” when it ends its effect, and when the brain adapts to its continued effect, dependence and withdrawal symptoms occur.

That is, for many people, tranquilizers do not resolve your anxiety or sleep disorder and can also generate a new problem of abuse, when its effect is superimposed, the alcoholic drinks, and dependency, when the brain adapts to tranquilizers continued shooting, since it can develop an addiction to these medications. When addiction has been consolidated, it is likely that the day you stop taking this medicine present a characteristic withdrawal symptoms, that in severe cases can reach an epileptic seizure or a confusional State with persecutory ideas.

Finally if you take pills or drinks alcohol and tranquilizers to sleep, may suffer an overdose of these two substances which, for the sum of their effects, can produce a great slowing of all functions of the organism, which in severe cases can reach the heart and breathing stop.

Therefore, the person who takes pills tranquilizers or sleeping should not take alcoholic drinks and the person who has had a problem with alcohol should not take tranquilizers, if you can not stop drinking alcoholic beverages.

The symptoms of anxiety or insomnia, are often the result of other psychiatric or addictive, disorders which require a specialized diagnostic evaluation and a specific treatment, which should be prescribed or supervised by a qualified professional. For example, if they are a result of a dependence on alcohol or a depressive disorder, would depression or alcoholism that would have to be resolved first. Otherwise, if prescribed tranquilizers or sleeping pills is not depression or alcoholism, it is likely that the symptoms of anxiety or insomnia do not improve, and in addition, the consumption of tranquilizers can generate a new problem of dependence, with the added risk of overdose if you take alcoholic beverages in addition.
