A Studio wants to find out from which level of blood pressure antihypertensive treatment should be initiated.

the University Institute of research on attention primary (IDIAP) Jordi Gol, initiates the first study in general population of southern Europe who wants to identify from what level of blood pressure, cardiovascular risk and in relation to the occurrence of cardiovascular episodes antihypertensive treatment is effective in reduction of blood pressure.

-the study is new in the sense that for the first time are scanned these values in native and not Anglo-Saxon population

– is widely proven that treatment of hypertension is effective to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular, such as myocardial infarction or stroke events. However, there is considerable controversy regarding the identification of the optimal initial blood pressure level is to start antihypertensive treatment

– nor is it clear, once started the treatment, to which values must be reduced blood pressure levels to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular events

-La HTA in Spain presents a prevalence that is between 20% and 47% in the population aged 20 years and generates a high health cost, which in 2001 exceeded 1,144 million euros

– data will be obtained from the research platform SIDIAP (information system for the development of research in primary health care) that works with anonymised patient data visited in primary care centres of all Catalonia. consists of a population base of 5.835.000 patients

Spain, January 2013.- M ª del Mar García, medical unit of clinical research in primary of the Instituto Catalán health care (ICS) and principal investigator of the project “realization of logon in the primary prevention of episodes antihypertensive treatment cardiovascular. EITEC project “, points out that the main objectives of the project, which now starts are” identify from what level of basal arterial pressure, basal cardiovascular risk and reduction of blood pressure in relation to the onset of cardiovascular episodes antihypertensive treatment is effective. And to analyze the cost-effectiveness of antihypertensive treatment based on basal blood pressure and cardiovascular risk basal levels “.

“Clinical practice guides point out as normal values that blood pressure that is below 140mmHg/mmHg in general population, and between 130mmHg/85mmHg in diabetic population or population over age 65. While these recommendations are based on clinical trials and observational studies, according to Dr. M ª Mar Garcia, of the Group of investigation in Vascular health of the Institute of research in attention primary (IDIAP) Jordi Gol “do not possess the level of evidence required to answer two big questions: what the initial level of blood pressure from which is effective treatment in low risk population?”in less than 40 years, over 65s and diabetics? and second question: what is the therapeutic objective or reduction of blood pressure optimum to reduce episodes cardio and cerebrovascular in general low-risk population, under 40 years of age, older than 65 years and diabetics?. These are the questions that we want to solve with the study that the IDIAP launches ’.

Study: subjects and methodology

To carry out the research project, we will analyze the population without a history of cardiovascular episodes treated in primary care of the ICS. The data will be obtained from the SIDIAP.

The project “realization of logon in the primary prevention of episodes antihypertensive treatment cardiovascular. Project EITEC “has won a FIS (Fund for health research) that grants the Institute of health Carlos III at the last call 2012.

“The methodology will be based on analyzing a population cohort (Group of individuals that share certain characteristics) of new users of antihypertensive drugs versus a cohort that receives no treatment to make an estimate of the future episodes cardio and cerebrovascular. The study will last about 3 years and are expected to have the first preliminary results in one year.

what is the SIDIAP?

Created in 2010 by initiative of the ICS and the IDIAP, SIDIAP (information system for the development of the primary health care research) was created with the main objective of promoting the development of research projects using data from medical history e-CAP and other complementary databases. Indeed, this is its main objective: generate reliable databases for research from the records of electronic medical records in primary care of the ICS (e-CAP).

Currently, the SIDIAP contains information of the eCAP of 274 teams of primary care (EAP) of Catalonia with a mapped population of 5.835.000 patients (80% of the Catalan population).

what is the IDIAP?

The Jordi Gol Foundation i Gurina was created in 1996 by the Catalan Health Institute, with the aim of promoting and managing the innovation, training, teaching and research clinical, epidemiological and health services in the field of primary health care.

Since 2006 he is the attention primary Jordi Gol (IDIAP Jordi Gol) Research Institute. In 2010 he ascribes to the UAB as a University Institute of primary care research.

Since August has the quality certification ISO 9001: 2008, in their activities of support and advice to research projects.
