new consultation of nursing in the Alcorcón Foundation Hospital pharmacy service

care integral farmacoterapéutica for the benefit of the patient

Madrid, 2011-August the consultation offers specific nursing care to patients who are treated in outpatient medical treatment requires the administration of medications via parenteral in the home of the patient. It is part of ambulatory dispensation of drugs unit and offers a new model of care to the patient.

Initially these cases were cared for in Hospital of the Centre, and this new consultation, patients have come to be served in the pharmacy service. Completed the care of the patient by the doctor specialist, it goes to the pharmacy service, where in addition to receiving pharmaceutical care linked to the process of dispensing of the medicinal product, is given attention and specialized nursing care for the administration of his treatment at home.

The consultation attends to patients with digestive pathology (liver diseases and inflammatory bowel disease) through consultations of high resolution and the patients of Neurology (MS) that need a self-administration of their parenteral medication at home.

It currently serves more than 200 patients. It is expected to be extended this consultation to other outpatient delivery programmes, that 70% of patients treated in ambulatory dispensing unit need a medication administered parenterally.

After consensus among pharmacy service and the management of nursing, was opened in the hospital an independent physical space to provide the patient a greater degree of privacy in the consultation. Work is coordinated with the dispensation ambulatory unit and has continued medical care to solve possible emergency situations.

With the addition of this new provision, the pharmacy service modifies the model of patient care, betting on a care comprehensive farmacoterapéutica whose objective is to achieve greater efficiency by ensuring the maximum well-being for the patient.

Madrid, 2011-August the service of Neurology of the University Hospital of Getafe has published all the protocols of medical action and nursing for the diagnosis and treatment of strokecombining them in a handy manual of useful professional dealing with these cases. Manual have been developed as Yolanda Aladro and Ana Pinel neurólogas in collaboration with other practitioners and nurses of the service.

Stroke or disease stroke is a disease caused by a circulatory disorder in the brain which alters temporary or definitively its operation. Each year are diagnosed some 120,000 cases of stroke in Spain, a disease with a high rate of mortality and important consequences.

Speed of your diagnosis and the establishment of an appropriate treatment are key to reducing the mortality and morbidity, therefore, is essential to work in a consensus among professionals, according to a series of protocols that help make the differential diagnosis and to advertise the different treatments that can receive the patient, as well as the necessary diagnostic tests and possible complications that may arise in the course of the disease.

The doctors have worked over one year to develop this book “by Neurologists for neurologists,” within the project for the implementation of the stroke unit of the University Hospital of Getafe. In addition, this manual simplifies concepts and allows the work of the specialist to develop more rapidly and effectively as possible according to common criteria.

Are these liquids explosive?

are these liquids explosive?

-a team of researchers from the University of the Basque country (UPV/EHU) has developed a method for determining the chemical composition of suspicious liquids for explosives seized police. Some of the samples contain substances hazardous to health, such as methanol and boric acid

Spain, 2011-August every year security forces confiscated tons of pyrotechnic substances in principle, for the manufacture of fireworks of low power (such as flares or those used in artistic or sports events), but that may also end up in the hands of hooligans or violent groups.

Now a group of chemists at the University of the Basque country (UPV/EHU) has developed a method which provides the judges conclusive scientific evidence about the nature of such liquids. Until now many ways to the detection of high explosives, such as TNT, had engaged but only for minor power, although they can also be dangerous.

“ Have combined four techniques commonly used in laboratories to determine relatively easily, explosive or flammable compounds in liquids of dubious origin ”, emphasizes SINC Kepa Castro, researcher at the UPV/EHU and lead author of the study

On the one hand, the molecular composition of substances is obtained with two spectroscopic techniques (Raman and infrared), which can be carried out with portable devices in airports, customs and port offices.

On the other hand, to determine what elements present the sample uses a detector energy dispersive (EDS), to adding images that provides an electronic scanning microscope (SEM).

“ With the technique SEM-EDS visualizes how are distributed and grouped the elements in the sample (calcium with sulfur suggests the presence of a calcium sulfate, for example) ”, explains Castro, “ and across the four techniques data can corroborate or confirm the results ”.

Samples with hazardous compounds

To validate the method scientists have applied it on five samples of confiscated liquids. Four of them, the results are consistent with its use for fireworks of low power. Alcohols such as the isopropyl and methanol were used for solubility compounds and the scientists managed to produce flames of colors.

The use of methanol as a main solvent was a surprise for the team, this compound is very toxic to humans (cause acidosis and blindness) and its use is restricted in many countries.

Boric acid, a substance recently joined the list was also detected in other fluids of the “ highly troubling ” of the REACH Regulation (registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) of the European Union. These acids can affect negatively human reproductive function.

The fifth sample not surprisingly found no substance that entered the ignition or develop. “ Probably a delay you flame, which is used just to otherwise: prevent fire ”, suggests the researcher.

Among all the submitted projects, the selection Committee will establish a first nomination for evaluating projects based on the following criteria: innovative contribution, i.e., what new features and benefits introduced on other proposals of eHealth, either from the point of view technological, operational or implementation; Technological contribution relating to ICT, or to what extent is a relevant use of these tools and if the technologies are enabling a substantial part of the added value of the project; Utility, consider the way in which the draft resolves an objetivada need if he is ability to articulate a better functioning of the health system and is more responsive to the needs of the citizen; Functionality, it will serve the practical aspect of the project and if it really provides the benefits for which has been designed, and impact, deemed to what extent the project is replicable or extrapolated and if you have ability to positively influence the development of eHealth in Spain, in terms of results in the short term and potential in the medium term. The submission of preliminary phases to implementing projects or research projects is explicitly excluded underway.

After this initial selection, the nominated projects will be subject to an online vote open between 1 and 23 September, through the web page of SIMO Network and other web sites and online publications of the sector, which will finally decide what is the winning proposal. The communication of the result to the winner and other nominated candidates will be made public on September 27, 2011.
