Canaries experts gather in Las Palmas to discuss the latest advances in chronic kidney disease

-Chronic kidney disease affects 10% of the Spanish population and most unknown symptoms

-Canary is the community that presents the highest rates of kidney patients, with 650 patients on dialysis per million inhabitants

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, January 2012.- expert in Nephrology are meeting today in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to share the latest news about chronic kidney disease (ERC), its treatment and the importance of early detection. The course, which will take place in the official College of physicians of the city, is organised by the Canaria society of Nephrology in collaboration with Abbott and are expected to attend 20 Nephrologists.

One of the key issues to be addressed during the meeting will be the experience with selective activators of receptors for vitamin D in the approach of kidney disease. Due to the deterioration of kidney function, patients with kidney disease often have difficulty to manufacture vitamin D and therefore, to take advantage at the intestinal level calcium from food. This produces a bad calcification of bones, causing pain and fracture them ” says Dr. Benito Maceira, President of the society Canaria of Nephrology.

These triggers prevent and treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), asymptomatic illness brought on by this lack of calcium with 7 out of 10 patients with advanced renal failure. HPTS, characterized by high levels of PTH in the blood, is a process that occurs when patients the kidneys can not already regulate the amount of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D active blood. It is important to diagnose and treat the Shpt early that if left untreated, bone problems of the sick person may incapacitate him.

The cardio-renal syndrome

Chronic kidney disease affects 10% of the population and the majority of Spaniards unknown symptoms. Canary is the region that most afflicted with a rate of 650 patients on dialysis per million inhabitants. According to Dr. Maceira, that ignorance makes that often patients do not attend your doctor. The early diagnosis of the ERC in early stages (1 and 2) is essential for the prevention of the loss of renal function and cardiovascular complications. So it is important to raise awareness about the disease and how to prevent ”.

Early diagnosis aims to prevent kidney failure and prevention of cardiovascular complications caused by the intense association between kidney disease and disease of the heart and arteries. This relationship between heart and kidneys is what is known as cardio-renal syndrome. Many people don’t know that a few patients kidneys may pose a diseased heart and vice versa. We can prevent it with a proper diet low in fat and salt, exercise and control of blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels ”, noted Dr. Maceira.

The main factors of cardiovascular risk and co-morbidities associated with the ERC are Dyslipidemia (29.3%), obesity (26.1%), hypertension (24.1%) and diabetes (9.2%), osteoporosis (8.2%) and bone problems (5%). A control diet and weight, changes in habits (quitting, for example), and the multidisciplinary approach to improve the prognosis of patients with ERC. When the patient arrives at the final stages of the disease, can only be treated with alternative therapies of kidney function as dialysis or kidney transplantation.
