The figures for blood glucose is more complicated control in people with type 2 diabetes.

figures of blood glucose is more difficult to control in people with type 2 diabetes.

VIII course of theoretical-practical update in Diabetes Mellitus type 2 Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid (October 19-21)

– close to 5 million Spaniards suffer from type 2 diabetes, and half do not know

– has so far not been confirmed be tighter glycemic control decreases the risk of having a cardiovascular event

Madrid, 2011-October in Spain, type 2 diabetes affects 13.8 per cent of people, i.e., almost 5 million Spaniards, although 6% don’t know. These figures are increasing due to, among other factors, the sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity.

“ In diabetes type 2 is essential to control not only the blood glucose, but other cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, lipids, body weight, etc. ”, explains Dr. Lucrecia Herranz de la Morena, in the service of Endocrinology and nutrition of the Hospital Universitario La Paz of Madrid. This fact, together with the role of the family physician in the management of type 2 diabetes, entails the need for specific training on this condition that these specialists.

For this reason, the Foundation for Diabetes held last week VIII course of theoretical-practical update in Diabetes Mellitus type 2, with the collaboration of Hospital Universitario La Paz of Madrid, aimed at promoting the deepening the knowledge about the disease in the family medicine. According to Dr. Herranz de la Morena, “ transmit the experience of a Diabetes unit to primary care physicians in relation to type 2 diabetes, which undoubtedly requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary treatment is ”.

Of all the cardiovascular risk factors which presented people with type 2 diabetes, in the words of Dr. Herranz of moray eels, “ the most difficult controlling is the Glycemic levels or blood glucose. In this regard, while we have effective drugs to treat hypertension and Dyslipidemia, blood glucose control requires the self-control of the person with diabetes, which requires knowledge about food and diet, on ways to adjust the treatment, etc. ”.To this end, this expert emphasizes the need that people with type 2 diabetes – not only in cases of type 1 diabetes in which the diabetológica education promotes more – received this training.

Deepening and discussion

During the course, consisting of theoretical training sessions and practical modules, have analyzed the most relevant aspects in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of diabetes type 2: Obesity in the type 2 diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, peripheral vascular disease, treatment of Dyslipidemia and hypertension, vascular complications, etc. “ it’s topics with very current, not only because of the progress we have achieved in recent years, but also in the search for consensus in some of them ”, explains Dr. Herranz de la Morena. One of them is the desirability of enhancing the treatment of blood glucose levels to prevent cardiovascular events. “ So far, there have been 3 studies to see if being more strict with the objective of control on glucose levels (defined with a hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin of 7 or less) decreased the risk of having a cardiovascular event – explains the doctor. However, these studies have produced no positive data on the subject ”.

Another issue that has been discussed is the benefits of diagnosis by hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin rather than through the basal blood glucose or postprandiales figures after a shot of glucose. According to Dr. Herranz de la Morena, “ change the diagnosis of basal or postprandiales figures criterion to hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin would result in an increase in the cost of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and a decrease in the number of cases that are diagnosed ”.

the telegerontología will make it possible to have the doctor at home and saving in health costs

El Professor José Millán Calenti, Professor of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and director of the research group, gerontology of the UDC, put the finishing touch to the FEIMESA Conference of medicine and health

-other DE LAS papers exclusive was the DE MIGUEL ÁNGEL QUINTELADIERCTOR of the unity of breast of the CNIO, QUE HABLÓ QUE LOS advances in research for classifying different types of cancer of breast and improve LA therapy

A Coruña, October 2011.- the last day of FEIMESA, dedicated to disability, dependency and higher, unveiled what would be the closest thing to having a doctor at home: the Telegerontología, a resource pioneer new technologies that would serve as a home-based support for people-based elderly or dependent. It is a world novelty within public health developed by the team of r & d of the La Coruña Professor Millán Calenti, who introduced him exclusively in the framework of the exhibition of medicine and health, which took place in A Coruña.

It is a 100 by 100 gallego is in pilot phase although it is planned to start marketing in January 2012. The Diputación de A Coruña is planning its next deployment in 83 municipalities in the province and currently runs the civic centers of Coruña.

The Telegerontología enables videoconferencing with doctors and health, is they can exercise as training memory for older people, avoid unnecessary journeys to health centres, representing a saving of the health system. It is framed in the e-health and has many other applications are still in study. On the other hand, it is also in talks with ophthalmologists, that the system could allow, for example, in case of suffering falls, conduct the checkup by videoconference.

Selection of patients for breast cancer

Miguel Ángel Quintela, director of the breast unit of the National Center for cancer research (CNIO), also appeared in the last of the days of FEIMESA with a presentation on “ breast cancer research. He stressed the advances of recent years when it comes to the therapeutic customization to treat the sick of breast cancer by groups. Until the date and for about 7 years three types can be distinguished: the affected need not hormonal treatment, those who do not receive chemotherapy and those of the type Her+2, which obtained a specific therapy. Thus we can determine the most beneficial treatment.

Cancer is a heterogeneous disease, but in the 1980s was in the same way to everyone, and if all they were given chemotherapy, the results were not the best for all. That is why, as pointed out Quintela, “ maybe only benefited from treatment by 30% ”. We must also take into account the cost, that breast cancer patients may have a spending on drugs between 6,000 to 8,000 euros per month, a medication that sometimes only works in one of every four sick.

And always prevention: Spain are detected annually 20,000 cases of breast cancer which 17,000 are diagnosed through a mammogram, “ annual compulsory from the age of 50 ”. This allows to locate tumors, which are best dealt with with metastasis. For the Board of the CNIO, it must continue to invest in research to get to know better the subtypes. Now three types are already known, but it could become a new classification with other subgroups.

Three days have passed by FEIMESA more than 50 experts, scientists and researchers, both Spaniards and foreigners, some of them world specialists in their field, presenting news and medical breakthroughs in exclusive.

Each day is devoted to a topical subject: “ sustainability of the health system in Spain ”, “ research, technology and training ” and “ disabilities, dependency and older ”. Also addressed hot topics such as the cost savings in the health system, the professional intrusion, access to medicines in countries of the third world or the sudden death in the sport.

On the other hand, the audience has been able to make free health checkups, vision tips, oral and auditory, and participate in Raffles for stays in spas, among others.

– the new laboratory has eight modules and a small amphitheatre, occupying a total area of 700 square meters with the latest virtual reality simulators

Bilbao, 2011-October on Tuesday morning took place the inauguration of the new laboratory of skills in surgery and Radiology Department of the Faculty of medicine and Dentistry of the University in country Basque/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU). “ This new laboratory puts the UPV/EHU in the forefront on virtual simulation, both for undergraduate students of graduate ”, says Professor Ignacio García-Alonso, Professor of the Department of surgery, radiology and medical physics from the BASQUE country.

In the formation of degree, the new lab allows train the students in surgical skills before actual practices in the hospital. “ Among other skills, students learn to perform surgical sutures, bandages, bladder drilling, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation auto or basic function in the operating room ”, advises Professor García-Alonso. All this is possible thanks to the simulation of virtual reality available to the laboratory. “ Also have a room of communication skills, where you practice the doctor-patient relationship ”, adds Professor of the BASQUE country.

As for applications postgraduate courses, laboratory allows simulations to provide basic skills in microsurgery, laparoscopic and neuronavegacion students.

“ Had more or less fully equipped ” – ensures the Professor – “ however, after being at the University of Maastricht in November of the year past, one of the more pioneers at European level in medical simulation equipment, have managed to get its height ”, says Professor García-Alonso, who claims that the simulator which will enjoy the UPV/EHU students is “ excellent ” and one of the most advanced in the world. “ The construction period has lasted for a year, but it was worth ”, University Professor says satisfied.
