Early diagnosis of childhood renal diseases.

Early diagnosis of renal diseases children.

CTB-UPM researchers help identify the elements responsible for the obstructive nephropathy, the most frequent congenital kidney disease.

Spain, 2011-October The work developed by researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid opens a new path for the study of the obstructive nephropathy, one of the more complex renal disorders with devastating consequences on the health of many newborns.

Children affected by this disease suffer a partial or total blockage of the urinary tract, preventing a normal flow of urine, which has just been accumulating in the kidney. As a result, serious injuries occur in this body that, in many cases, require surgery and transplants.

The main objective of the study was “ detected through the analysis based on complex networks, are responsible for this disease elements ”, says Massimiliano Zanin, researcher at the center of biomedical technology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and one of the authors of the paper.

To this end, data were analyzed of ten patients, i.e., affected by the disease, and other ten subjects of control or healthy people. These data include the levels of 852 metabolites, molecules responsible for the bio-chemical activity of any cell, and 834 microRNA, small RNA chains that blocked the transcription of other genes, and therefore regulate the metabolism of cells. The large amount of data is a challenge: how to find the elements responsible for the disease efficiently?

The analysis has been done through a mathematical formalism known as theory of complex networks. These networks are virtual objects composed of nodes and links between pairs of nodes that satisfy certain properties. An example explains the Professor, so are social networks, where nodes represent different people, and links together people who share a bond of friendship.

In this study, the nodes represented various metabolites and microRNAs, and links connecting pairs of elements whose levels were out of the range expected in healthy people and therefore had an expression “ abnormal ”.

Complex for the analysis of congenital diseases networks

According to the researchers, “ the main obtained conclusion is that the topology of the complex networks associated with each person can reveal useful information about the degree of severity of this disease, as well as help identify the elements responsible for the same ”. In the future, these results could serve to facilitate early detection of disease.

In addition, the same structure of networks may allow the identification, specifically for each patient, the metabolic and genetic elements responsible for the development of the obstruction. All this would affect a significant improvement of treatment and quality of life of patients.

Further, indicate “ hope that the proposed technique will serve for the analysis of other diseases ” so that this method be applied to other problems, especially in the field of biomedicine, for “ not easily removable results with other techniques of data mining ”.

Work “ Complex Networks analysis of Obstructive Nephropathy Data ” (Massimiliano Zanin and Stefano Boccaletti) has been published in the journal Chaos. Recently, Physics Today magazine has included it in its Research Highlights, the selection section performs every month with the best publications of Physics in the world.

The first pan European survey on allergy to house dust mites will assess its impact on the quality of life.

The first pan-European survey on allergy to house dust mites will evaluate its impact on the quality of life

– autumn concentrations of mites can double or triple in comparison with the summer months

-The President of the Societat Catalana d ’ Alergologia i Immunology clinic warns about the risk of allergies in the Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands, for its climate conducive to high concentrations of dust mites

– En Spain 40% of queries to the specialist are allergies to dust mites

Madrid, 2011-October more than 4,000 patients of Spain, Italy, Germany and France are currently involved in the first pan-European survey on allergy to house dust mites. The main objective of this survey, promoted by Stallergenes S.A. and whose results will be known in late October, is to assess the prevalence and impact on the quality of life of one of the most common forms of respiratory allergy, which manifests with particular virulence in autumn.

Although this is a perennial allergies, increased the concentrations of fall dust mites may worsen the allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, moqueo, nasal congestion, tearing and redness of eyes, asthma, and shortness of breath. Moreover, for asthmatic children as adult chronic exposure to the to thedomestic érgenos is associated not only with the risk of respiratory symptoms, but also with worsening pulmonary function.

A study conducted by the Woolcock Institute of medical research has shown that the levels of concentration of mites can double or triple in autumn, in comparison with the summer months. The increase in humidity and increasingly warmer temperatures at this time are ideal conditions for reproduction, as well as heaters and reduced ventilation in homes. “ Climates of the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean coast, characterized by a degree of relative humidity between 65 and 80% and temperatures between 22 and 26 ° C, are the best conditions for the rapid reproduction of dust mites and have, as a result, one of the major impact of this allergy in Europe. In the Canary Islands the situation is accentuated because atmospheric conditions are maintained throughout the year ”, explains Dr. Antonio Valero, President of the (Societat Catalana d ’ Alergologia i Immunology clinic) and the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona allergist. Basic measures of prevention as Dr. Valero recommends not accumulate dust in homes, that dust not exceeding surfaces to the environment when cleaning (so it is necessary to use a damp cloth and aspire rather than sweep) and the use of acaricides sprays, as well as covers special anti dust mite for pillows and mattresses. And, in the case of presenting symptoms, always go to the Allergist, which barred the necessary treatment for allergy in Spain is cause of 40% of queries this specialist.

Allergen immunotherapy against dust mites

Experts agree that allergen immunotherapy constitutes an appropriate treatment option for patients who suffer from moderate to severe respiratory allergies. It is the only known method that attacks not only the symptoms but the cause of these allergies.

The World Health Organization recommends immunotherapy allergen for patients with allergic rhinitis when symptomatic treatment is insufficient to control the symptoms or cause unwanted side effects or when the patient is not capable of managing symptomatic treatment.

In addition to the traditional route, which consists of subcutaneous injections, the sublingual has a better profile of tolerance, being especially suitable for children for its ease of administration.

Dust mites

Dust mites are microscopic, invisible animals at a glance. They feed mainly on human and pet dander. 2 milligrams of mites per gram of dust is enough to raise an allergic, and 10 milligrams per gram of dust can cause an asthma attack. Dust mites can be found many places in a house where survive, such as carpets, curtains, pillows, books and other pieces of furniture. Dust mites domestic as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae are the most common species found in any home. Rather than own mites, their faeces, shells and corpses which cause allergic reactions, are implying that even after eradicating them symptoms may temporarily persist.

On Stallergenes

Stallergenes S.A. is a biopharmaceutical company international, a leader in the manufacture and innovation of allergen immunotherapy treatments. Clinical laboratory specialists can diagnose and classify urological and nephrologic diseases studying the red cells excreted in the urine.

Clinical laboratory specialists can diagnose and classify urological and nephrologic diseases studying the red cells excreted in the urine

the Spanish society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology holds the distinction of the red cells of glomerular origin seminar: an illusion or a useful tool for clinical diagnosis?

– to do so, have a method that investigates the morphological abnormalities of the red cells and, depending on the result classifies hematuria (blood in the urine loss) at isomórfica or Dimorphous

-the isomórfica determines urologic diseases and the Dimorphous is presentexclusively, in the nephrologic

-20% of the general population suffers from urinary tract conditions

-urinary sediment it is the last manual analyses with subjective final evaluation, which means that you know the more and more experience is the best researcher and more specialized results are obtained

– from all the tests for the diagnosis of renal diseases, the urine is the less invasive and less health cost

Madrid, October of 2011- the study of urinary sediment is a source of important information in the evaluation of kidney injury and more when around 20% of the general population suffers conditions in the apparatus urinal. “ from my experience, in an only Institute of Urology, Nephrology and Andrology, dedicated to deal with this kind of problem, carried more than 60,000 annual outpatient visits and nearly 4,000 surgical ”, says Dr. Fernando Dalet, Member of the Spanish society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology (SEQC).

As in other pathologies, the early diagnosis of renal lesions is essential, and in doing so, they are vital tests to achieve this. In this sense, the Spanish society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology (SEQC) aims to put on the table the important role of laboratory tests to determine the majority of conditions associated with the urinary system. To this end, has organised the distinction of the red cells of glomerular origin seminar: an illusion or a useful tool for clinical diagnosis?, sponsored by the Fundación José Luis Castaño for the development of Clinical Biochemistry.

“ Urine sediment is, in practice, the last of the manual analysis with subjective final evaluation, which means, in short, the more you know and greater experience has the best researcher and more specialized results are obtained ”, explains Dr. Dalet. “ hence, the importance of generating knowledge and report on developments in this field that, as with everything, there are easy cases of rapid diagnosis and other complex ”, adds the expert.

Today, have different tests to determine if a person suffers or not kidney disease. “ There are diagnostic tests for the image (x-rays, ultrasound and CT), the Liveview (Endoscopy) and the analytical. “ Almost all, except ultrasonography and urine are invasive tests, i.e., is undermining the integrity of the patient and there is always some risk ”, reveals Dr. Dalet. This reason and others such as security, its easy to obtain and its very low cost lead experts to recommend this diagnostic test.

The red cells as clinical diagnostic tool

Hematuria (blood in the urine loss) is a sign (not a symptom) which immediately alerts not only to the clinic but also to the patient, which attends the doctor’s presuroso. “ The main reason for this fact is that all urological pathologies and almost all the nephrologic show this sign ”, explains Dr. Dalet.

Currently, the clinical laboratory has a method that investigates the morphological abnormalities of the red cells and depending on the result classifies hematuria in isomórfica or Dimorphous. “ Hematuria isomórfica comes from the direct discharge of blood capillaries to the urinary stream, as occurs in urological diseases, so the patient can lead to the urologist ”, says Dr. Dalet. “ On the other hand, adds expert, Dimorphous hematuria comes the filtration unit nefrónica and indicates a lesion of the glomerulus. This means that this type of hematurias will be present exclusively in own kidney diseases of nefrológico origin, or in those of a systemic nature with impact on the kidney as hypertension, diabetes, gout or dislipemias, among others ”.

In this regard and in conclusion, Dr. Dalet says that “ thanks to a simple test of urine, which has a cost very low for the national health system, can control and keep track of the number of people over age 50 has one or more of the above diseases. This is a challenge and a change in attitude that still continue costly analysis of blood as a follow-up of these patients ”.

The SEQC

The Spanish society of Clinical Biochemistry and pathology Molecular (SEQC) – founded in 1976 – currently includes around 2,000 professionals and main aims to bring together all scientists interested in the field of the clinical laboratory, promoting the dissemination of scientific and technical periodicalsorganize meetings, courses and national and international congresses and cooperate with other scientific societies. Also, the society wants to contribute to study and recommend standardised methods and to establish guidelines and recommendations for training in the field of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology.
