Early diagnosis of renal diseases children.

Early diagnosis of renal diseases children.

CTB-UPM researchers help identify the elements responsible for the obstructive nephropathy, the most frequent congenital kidney disease.

Spain, 2011-October The work developed by researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid opens a new path for the study of the obstructive nephropathy, one of the more complex renal disorders with devastating consequences on the health of many newborns.

Children affected by this disease suffer a partial or total blockage of the urinary tract, preventing a normal flow of urine, which has just been accumulating in the kidney. As a result, serious injuries occur in this body that, in many cases, require surgery and transplants.

The main objective of the study was “ detected through the analysis based on complex networks, are responsible for this disease elements ”, says Massimiliano Zanin, researcher at the center of biomedical technology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and one of the authors of the paper.

To this end, data were analyzed of ten patients, i.e., affected by the disease, and other ten subjects of control or healthy people. These data include the levels of 852 metabolites, molecules responsible for the bio-chemical activity of any cell, and 834 microRNA, small RNA chains that blocked the transcription of other genes, and therefore regulate the metabolism of cells. The large amount of data is a challenge: how to find the elements responsible for the disease efficiently?

The analysis has been done through a mathematical formalism known as theory of complex networks. These networks are virtual objects composed of nodes and links between pairs of nodes that satisfy certain properties. An example explains the Professor, so are social networks, where nodes represent different people, and links together people who share a bond of friendship.

In this study, the nodes represented various metabolites and microRNAs, and links connecting pairs of elements whose levels were out of the range expected in healthy people and therefore had an expression “ abnormal ”.

Complex for the analysis of congenital diseases networks

According to the researchers, “ the main obtained conclusion is that the topology of the complex networks associated with each person can reveal useful information about the degree of severity of this disease, as well as help identify the elements responsible for the same ”. In the future, these results could serve to facilitate early detection of disease.

In addition, the same structure of networks may allow the identification, specifically for each patient, the metabolic and genetic elements responsible for the development of the obstruction. All this would affect a significant improvement of treatment and quality of life of patients.

Further, indicate “ hope that the proposed technique will serve for the analysis of other diseases ” so that this method be applied to other problems, especially in the field of biomedicine, for “ not easily removable results with other techniques of data mining ”.

Work “ Complex Networks analysis of Obstructive Nephropathy Data ” (Massimiliano Zanin and Stefano Boccaletti) has been published in the journal Chaos. Recently, Physics Today magazine has included it in its Research Highlights, the selection section performs every month with the best publications of Physics in the world.

The first pan European survey on allergy to house dust mites will evaluate its impact on the quality of life

The first pan-European survey on allergy to house dust mites will evaluate its impact on the quality of life

– autumn concentrations of mites can double or triple in comparison with the summer months

-The President of the Societat Catalana d ’ Alergologia i Immunology clinic warns about the risk of allergies in the Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands, for its climate conducive to high concentrations of dust mites

– En Spain 40% of queries to the specialist are allergies to dust mites

Madrid, 2011-October more than 4,000 patients of Spain, Italy, Germany and France are currently involved in the first pan-European survey on allergy to house dust mites. The main objective of this survey, promoted by Stallergenes S.A. and whose results will be known in late October, is to assess the prevalence and impact on the quality of life of one of the most common forms of respiratory allergy, which manifests with particular virulence in autumn.

Although this is a perennial allergies, increased the concentrations of fall dust mites may worsen the allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, moqueo, nasal congestion, tearing and redness of eyes, asthma, and shortness of breath. Moreover, for asthmatic children as adult chronic exposure to the to thedomestic érgenos is associated not only with the risk of respiratory symptoms, but also with worsening pulmonary function.

A study conducted by the Woolcock Institute of medical research has shown that the levels of concentration of mites can double or triple in autumn, in comparison with the summer months. The increase in humidity and increasingly warmer temperatures at this time are ideal conditions for reproduction, as well as heaters and reduced ventilation in homes. “ Climates of the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean coast, characterized by a degree of relative humidity between 65 and 80% and temperatures between 22 and 26 ° C, are the best conditions for the rapid reproduction of dust mites and have, as a result, one of the major impact of this allergy in Europe. In the Canary Islands the situation is accentuated because atmospheric conditions are maintained throughout the year ”, explains Dr. Antonio Valero, President of the (Societat Catalana d ’ Alergologia i Immunology clinic) and the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona allergist. Basic measures of prevention as Dr. Valero recommends not accumulate dust in homes, that dust not exceeding surfaces to the environment when cleaning (so it is necessary to use a damp cloth and aspire rather than sweep) and the use of acaricides sprays, as well as covers special anti dust mite for pillows and mattresses. And, in the case of presenting symptoms, always go to the Allergist, which barred the necessary treatment for allergy in Spain is cause of 40% of queries this specialist.

Allergen immunotherapy against dust mites

Experts agree that allergen immunotherapy constitutes an appropriate treatment option for patients who suffer from moderate to severe respiratory allergies. It is the only known method that attacks not only the symptoms but the cause of these allergies.

The World Health Organization recommends immunotherapy allergen for patients with allergic rhinitis when symptomatic treatment is insufficient to control the symptoms or cause unwanted side effects or when the patient is not capable of managing symptomatic treatment.

In addition to the traditional route, which consists of subcutaneous injections, the sublingual has a better profile of tolerance, being especially suitable for children for its ease of administration.

Dust mites

Dust mites are microscopic, invisible animals at a glance. They feed mainly on human and pet dander. 2 milligrams of mites per gram of dust is enough to raise an allergic, and 10 milligrams per gram of dust can cause an asthma attack. Dust mites can be found many places in a house where survive, such as carpets, curtains, pillows, books and other pieces of furniture. Dust mites domestic as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae are the most common species found in any home. Rather than own mites, their faeces, shells and corpses which cause allergic reactions, are implying that even after eradicating them symptoms may temporarily persist.

On Stallergenes

Stallergenes S.A. is a biopharmaceutical company international, a leader in the manufacture and innovation of allergen immunotherapy treatments. Starts the project “ asthma sport and health ”.

-a disease whose prevalence increases annually

-One of five asthmatic children lose six or more days of class because of his illness, and approximately 3% of all children aged between 9 and 12 years has visited emergency services by a crisis of asthma

– the project involve 16 school doctors that will work in network to move the program information to more than 80 schools in Andalusia

-school doctors will be teachers so they responsible to explain to the students how to recognize symptoms, what first aid measures must be taken before a crisis of asthma and, in general, helping them to achieve better control of the disease

– If the teacher understands and controls what their behavior and evolución, may be much help the child in the crises that can endure during school and after school
seek
-experts not only to facilitate the knowledge of asthma, but also promote to classes and physical education activities safer for those who suffer from

Sevilla, 2011-October according to the international study of asthma and allergies in childhood (ISAAC), nearly 15% of Spanish adolescents aged between 13 and 14 years of age have had symptoms of the disease in the last year

In Spain one of every five asthmatic children lose six or more days of class due to his illness, and approximately 3% of all children aged between 9 and 12 years has visited emergency services by a crisis of asthma. In addition, in recent years has increased the number of children of 6 years with this pathology.

Faced with this prospect, the Group of developing respiratory (GVR) of the Association Spanish paediatric of primary care (pediatricians) has launched various initiatives to promote better care for asthma in schools and train teachers of physical education about this disease. Among them the project “ asthma, sport and health ”.

“ Asthma, sport and health ”

“ Asthma, sport and health ” is an initiative targeting minors schools teachers learn about the symptoms of the disease and they have the necessary knowledge to aid and improve the quality of life of the students.

At first, a pilot project was conducted in institutes of secondary education in Seville, which yielded excellent results. Now, after this initial success, Dr. Manuel Praena, Coordinator of the GVR’s pediatricians, director of the Group of education and health in asthma (GESA) and La Candelaria in Seville Health Center primary care physician, leads an initiative more ambitious and greater geographical coverage.

The study was carried out in other primary schools in other cities of Andalusia. On this occasion and says doctor Praena “ involve 16 school doctors that will work in network to move the educational package “ asthma sport and health ” to all areas, reaching more than 80 colleges of all Andalusian provinces ”.

Andalusia is the only autonomous community which has school doctors attached to schools of primary education in the public sphere and the doctor Praena stresses that “ responsible for addressing and explain to the students information about asthma will be their teachers of physical education ”who will be previously, consisting of the medical school of the teams of school guidance (EOE).

in addition, this initiative aims to improve the knowledge of students with asthma while it raises other colleagues on the situation of children with the disease. In this sense, for experts it is very important for teachers to know the symptoms of the disease and have the necessary knowledge to assist children and improve the quality of life of the students.

In order to share information and to instruct teachers on asthma, for three days, the medical school participants will gather in the Center Andalusian Institute of public administration (IIAP) of La Cartuja to provide specific training in several chronic diseases such as asthma and on the draft children’s “ asthmaSport and health ”.

“ School doctors will be teachers so they responsible to explain to the students how to recognize symptoms, what first aid measures must be taken before a crisis of asthma and, in general, helping them to achieve a better control of asthma ”, emphasizes the expert.

In this sense, hope Marchal, Adviser of formation of the center of the center of the Faculty of Seville (CEP), dependent of the Ministry of education of Seville, said that “ if the teacher understands and controls which is the behavior and evolution of this disease, may help a lot the boy or the girl in crises that may suffer during the school period and non-formal ”.

Marchal also notes that “ teachers may also contribute to reinforce the instructions and advice from health services go marking for the use and management of the various health elements that make it easier to have a more normalized life and quality ”.

seek

in this way, specialists to improve the skills of students with asthma and sensitizing colleagues who do not have the disease on the situation of which her suffering and the possibility to control, and can perform a full life without limitations in their great majority.

With the expansion of this project, experts seek not only to facilitate the understanding of the disease, but to favor to classes and physical education activities safer for those who suffer from asthma.

Spanish Association of Pediatrics of primary care (pediatricians)

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics of primary care (pediatricians) was constituted as a Federation of associations of pediatricians who work in primary care, scientific and professional and non-profit, currently is associated more than 2,500 Spanish statewide primary care pediatricians.

Within it are different working groups on various subjects (Group prevention in childhood and adolescence, group of Airways, Pediatrics based on evidence, teaching MIR, international cooperation and hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder), brewing currently other working groups such as the one devoted to the pathology of adolescent sleep, the Pediatrics development or a research group.

The main objectives of this Association are to: promote the development of Pediatrics in primary care. Find the maximum State of health of the child and the adolescent. Promote your health. Prevent disease and to facilitate its recovery in case of contract promote and exercise teaching on pediatric primary care of the pregraduado and postgraduate, resident of Pediatric doctors, medical residents in family medicine and community and professionals in the field of primary care; promote and exercise research; coordinate the different health programmes related to the child healthy and diseased; pick up issues and concerns related to the exercise of the primary care Pediatrics and represent the interests of its partners in the framework of laws and to the bodies of the public health administrations and teachers, and other bodies or national or international public or private entities; promote the search for suitable conditions to improve the professional development of Social and community Pediatrics; and coordinate with other similar, regional, national or international associations, activities and projects aimed at the improvement of the Pediatrics in primary care.

The change of season and the arrival of autumn lumbar pain increase more than 80% among adult.

-hospital Chiron Malaga opens a column unit that applies new therapies to prevent surgical intervention to 8 of every 10 patients affected by chronic or acute pain of column

– on a scale of 1 to 10, patients undergoing treatment reduced by more than 8 his back pain

– according to the Directorate General for researchn and innovation of the European Commission, low-back pain is the second leading cause of low labour and responsible for the loss of 700,000 working hours in Europe a year

Málaga, 2011-October Hospital Chiron Málaga wide trauma service and launches a column unit which will be offered a comprehensive treatment and customized to patients with pathology of intervertebral disc, lumbar or cervical pain, discoartrosis, facetary syndrome and degenerative pathology of the spinal column thereby ensuring the quality of assistance in this field and the autonomy of patients. This unit will be led by Dr. Victor urban, Member in addition to the team of Traumatology of the hospital.

The unit, according to explain medical specialists of the Centre Hospitalier, gets underway coinciding with the change of season and the arrival of autumn, moment in which increases in more than 80 per cent the number of patients affected by back pain.

In this sense, the specialist said that “ with lower temperatures, atmospheric pressure variation note much more in the interior of the joints, including the joint facetaría where there is a vacuum and that makes the bones are kept together causing a suction effect which aggravates the inflammation in the area and that explains that this pain increases ”. Similarly, Dr. urban, who emphasizes that although be exacerbated this back pain does not alteration that causes it, also attributed this increase in complaints of back to the increase of the stress it causes among adults return to everyday life and work.

The hospital, which is already pioneered the incorporation of services pointers in the province of Málaga, and the realization of labor in water or the launching of aesthetic services, among which emphasizes capillary medicine, incorporates this unit in order to reduce the number of surgeries of column currently carried out within the sector: health care and that, sometimes they become unnecessary.

According to the specialist, “ this new unit will avoid surgery 8 of every 10 patients affected by this disease at the same time that will ease the discomfort of those patients that surgery has not ended being him effective ”. According to medical specialists, “ our patients satisfaction is reflected in the evolution of the pain and, in this regard, at the end of the treatment the same reduction comes even to exceed 80 per cent between 6 and 12 months after the completion of the treatment ”.

Therapy, without surgery or hospital admission, therefore consist of combining the technical therapist vertebral axial decompression and infiltrations locoregional with potent anti-inflammatory action delayed in the injured area. In the case of the vertebral axial decompression technique will break the circle of pain from the injury and return to the body self-regulatory capacity through sessions that will increase according to the severity of the problem; on infiltration locoregional Centre will offer an analgesic effect on the painful area may reach perishable or final results in the improvement of the processes affecting the locomotor apparatus. This technique without side effects just stops also functional impairment that involves extended immobilization of the affected area.

For Dr. Victor urban, the launch of this unit is also a clear sense and is that “ the largest number of medical consultations of Traumatology in our Center are related back problems: sciatica and lumbago, disc herniation, vertebral fractures by osteoporosis or traumascoliosis and spinal deformities, lumbar arthritis, back pain, or stenosis of channel, among others.

Low-back pain, according to the Directorate General for research and innovation of the European Commission affects 67 million people in Europe, of which 5 million are Spanish. Similarly, it is estimated that 75% of the population suffers back pain at some point in his life; exceeds 90% before 3 months but in 5-10% that pain is cronifica. Finally, low-back pain is the second leading cause of low labour and responsible for the annual loss of 700,000 working hours in Europe.
