Music therapy improves the physical and psychological state of patients admitted to La Paz.

Madrid, April of 2013- studies in the University Hospital La Paz in Madrid and its Institute for health research (IdiPAZ) find a benefit from music therapy as a therapeutic adjunct to the medical treatment in admitted patients. Studies has been that in addition to the psychological effects, such as the improvement of self-esteem, integration, communication, or the process of grief after a loss, the sound of music also has physiological effects in the human body.

One of the main physiological effects of music therapy is related to rhythm, which is one of the musical elements together with the melody and the harmony., depending on the used music has been a modification of the respiratory, cardiac, blood rate even brain waves. There are other notable physiological effects such as increasing the level of resistance to pain, changes in muscle tone, temperature, glucose or hormone secretion, as well as a reduction in fatigue and stress.

Two doctoral theses

These parameters are those who studied in different research projects that have open IdiPAZ, the Institute of research health of Hospital La Paz. Result of this work, published two theses, one on its effect on babies from 0 to 6 months in pediatric intensive care and another about its effect on women with chemotherapy for breast cancer. Other research on the evaluation of mood in children aged 3 to 6 in the area of intensive care is currently underway.

Active program since 2003

This center of the community of Madrid has an active music program since 2003, year in which began the first study in the pediatric intensive care unit. In addition to the research-related activity, music therapists pay direct attention children and adult patients in different units.

About 7,000 children benefit

Up to now, in this hospital has been given direct attention to about 7,000 children in which there has been an improvement in the State of physical and psychological of the patient as well as other positive effects related directly to clinical indicators such as increasing oxygen saturation or the decrease of heart rate.

The music therapy program, framed in the hospital humanization Plan, aims to stimulate or relax the patient who is admitted to facilitate learning, mobility, communication, expression and at the same time make it easier your period of income.

Solidarity actions

On this occasion, is committed to the second edition of the Rock ‘ n ’ Roll Madrid Marathon & 1/2, which will be held in Madrid on April 28. Considered one of the essential events of Athletics lovers, it is of a great feast in which athletes and music take the most emblematic places of the capital.

Rock ‘ n ’ Roll Marathon Series is an American initiative in which participated already more than 600,000 runners in 33 cities, which was held for the first time in our country in 2012. Again, Madrid is the city chosen for the original competition in which music and sport join forces, and that more than 26,000 people will participate.

Athletes by the solidarity

A group of 25 athletes will participate in the race on behalf of Hospital La Paz with Hard Rock Cafe Madrid. Waiters, part of the marketing team, and even the Chef of the restaurant form this group of runners who have booked their dorsal fin for a good cause.
