(www.neomundo.com.ar) A new study suggests that doing weight training for a period of two years significantly improves symptoms engines of Parkinson’s disease in comparison to other forms of physical exercise, such as stretching exercises or balance.

Clinical trial compared two forms of exercise for Parkinson’s disease, will be presented during the 64th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology organization, to be held from 21 to April 28, 2012 in New Orleans, United States.UU.

Types of exercises

“Even though we knew that different physical types of exercises can help Parkinson’s patients in the short term, we didn’t know if the exercise improved the motor symptoms of the disease in the long term”, said the author of the study, Dr. Daniel Corcos, of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For the study, 48 people with Parkinson’s disease met with different exercise programs of progressive resistance weight training type, or they were assigned to different activities of fitness, flexibility, balance and strengthening exercises which included.

Patient groups carrying out these practices in way controlled for an hour, two times per week over two years.

While all forms of exercise helped lessen the motor symptoms after six months of practice, participants who did weight training recorded the most significant improvements after two years.

“Our results suggest that long-term weight training may be considered – by patients and their doctors – an important more for better management of Parkinson’s disease”, concluded Corcos.
