Shire supports the world rare disease day 2012.

Madrid, March 2012.- Shire supports the world rare disease day 2012. This day is annually celebrated every February 29 (28 February when the year is leap) at the international level in order to draw attention to this type of pathologies as a matter of public health and of the need to raise awareness of them.

The celebration of the world day for rare diseases, is coordinated at the international level from the European Organization for rare diseases (EURORDIS) and by the Spanish Federation for rare diseases (ERDF) in the case of Spain.

Between on February 25 and March 4 in Spain, numerous activities are carried out in different cities. As final CODA to the above-mentioned series of events will be held in Madrid, on March 4, the race III by the hope of families, organized by ERDF and whose sponsorship has been actively involved Shire. The race, the action with greater visibility of the world day, will take place in the Casa de Campo and will bring together more than 3,000 people.

According to data of EURORDIS and FEDER there are between 6,000 and 9,000 rare diseases, which affect approximately 30 million Europeans and 3 million Spaniards. As a leader in the treatment of rare diseases, the Division Human Genetic Therapies (HGT) of Shire, focused his work in research, development and commercialization of treatments for the disease of Fabry, Angioedema hereditary, syndrome, Hunter and Gaucher’s disease, and has set up a portfolio of products and solutions innovative for the treatment of rare diseases.

Shire also sponsor various initiatives related with the rare disease day world in other cities around the world, as for example Deuxième Journée des Maladies RareÅŸ ” (second day of the rare diseases) in Lausanne, Switzerland, February 25; the I Gala dinner charity of EURORDISon 29 February in Brussels; Day in the MassBio rare diseases at the Massachusetts State House, on 29 February and the day of the FDA for the support to patients for rare diseases, in Washington, D.C., on 1 March.
