granada, 27 feb ( EFE).-scientists from the University of Granada have confirmed that there is a significant and direct association between the nutritional status of children and who prepares food at home, and have shown that when cooked mother minors they are better fed and are less obese.

As reported by the academic institution in a statement, the children whose menus are prepared by their mothers are better fed and suffer less obesity, while the nutritional status of children is worse when a person other than the mother prepares the family menu.

This work has revealed that the question of who made the family daily menu is “very important”, according to the authors.

Scientists have observed in this way as a measure that the family menu is prepared by persons other than the mother, the nutritional status of children worsens considerably.

In this sense warns that currently remains the mother family figure who better knows the food needs of their children and the better prepared, in terms of food knowledge, for the development and maintenance of an optimal feeding family.

In this research, the scientists used a sample made up of 718 children and adolescent schoolchildren aged between 9 and 17 years of age, belonging to thirteen schools public and private of the city of Granada and its province.

Through the use of techniques of Anthropometry, were valued variables of weight and height of the subjects and thus the body mass index, were made according to age and sex.

Were also valued six skin folds (crease tricipital, bicipital, subscapularis, suprailíaco, crease of thigh and calf), as well as four bodily perimeters of the waist, hip, arm and thigh.

On the other hand, and in order to analyse the influence of the family environment in the development of overweight and obesity among the population of students, the UGR scientists used a questionnaire specifically developed by the research team.

The same not only recorded information relating to aspects of their family environment, but also the frequency of consumption of certain foods and the practice of physical activity.

Researchers have also found a relationship between the practice of sedentary leisure and the values of BMI (BMI), finding statistically significant differences for the BMI of those individuals with predominantly sedentary idle attitudes toward those others that did not maintain them.

As well, as it increases the number of hours that students watch television, play video games or are simply connected to the internet, their body mass index scores are increased exponentially.

In the light of the results of this work, scientists have concluded that there is “an urgent need” to promote healthy lifestyles among families, among them the practice of physical exercise through “classic games” is highly recommended and practices.

Is the best tool to maintain an adequate nutritional state and, ultimately, an optimal state of health, especially when the main involved are subjects of infants, school-age population in this case.
