COCEMFE calls for a genuine universal accessibility

-Still there are many physical barriers that prevent persons with disabilities to develop a standardized life

-COCEMFE calls on the Governments of the autonomous communities to update the rules on accessibility in urban planning

-the entity denounces the difficulties of access to education, culture, or the means of transport

Madrid, 2011-October the Spanish Confederation of people with physical disability and organic (COCEMFE) complaint that although progress on accessibility in our country has been featured yet there are many physical barriers that prevent persons with disabilities to develop a standardized life.

For this reason since the Confederation requests the political force that is elected in general elections from November 20 to work to achieve a true universal accessibility and to achieve a barrier-free Spain.

Persons with disabilities continue to face numerous barriers when it comes to pass through the streets of their cities. Is too common to still find curbs high or barriers, tunnels sidewalks or wastebaskets and lampposts poorly placed in the streets. An issue that should not be allowed because it is required by law that the urban planning of the cities on the basis of accessibility criteria ”, explains the President of COCEMFE, Mario García.

However, in many cases, the autonomous communities have legislation that is deprecated, and which is therefore necessary to update. From COCEMFE call on the Governments of these communities to settle this situation. It is necessary to review and update the different laws that exist on this subject ”, affects García.

Also still exist numerous barriers in accessing education, since lack of accessibility to schools, whether primary, secondary or university they hinder or prevent that they can study and the same lack of accessibility to museums, theatres, cinemas and other leisure activities, preventing their access to culture.

It is also necessary to work towards full accessibility to public transport systems. A section which also has been little in recent times but on which we must continue having to continue to improve, and to avoid situations such as Metro stations without lifts, informative displays that exclude persons with visual impairment, or inadequate training of staff serving persons with disabilities ”says the President of COCEMFE.

The Spanish Confederation of people with physical disability and organic (COCEMFE) is a non-governmental non-profit that was founded in 1980. It aims to unite, strengthen and form coordination efforts and activities of entities working in favour of persons with disabilities physical and organic to defend their rights and improve their quality of life. The entity brings together more than 1,360 organizations divided into autonomous confederations, State institutions and provincial federations which in turn, grouped to different local associations.
