Nephrologists and renal patients propose actions to improve the sustainability of treatment with dialysis.

quality and sustainability of the TSR conclusions from the Forum II.

-correct planning of treatment, ensure the Nephrologists in home peritoneal dialysis training, ensuring equity in access to all treatments and imitate the model of empowerment of transplants, some of the proposals of the GADDPE

-the home peritoneal dialysis improves the quality of life of the patientoffers clinical benefits, and also cheaper than hemodialysis for healthcare

Madrid, November 2011- the support group for the development of the Peritoneal Dialysis in Spain (GADDPE) and the Fundación Renal ALCER presented document conclusions of the II Forum of quality and sustainability of the Renal Sustitutivo treatment. Recommendations and proposals ” that gathers the main exhibitions held in II Forum of quality and sustainability of the TSR. The meeting brought together patients, members of the health administration and the Nephrology professionals and noted the actions undertaken to improve renal replacement therapy (TSR) in Spain.

The Forum was revealed that in the current economic context, the optimization of resources and the sustainability of the public system is key. In the case of Chronic Renal disease, in which only 50,000 patients consume nearly 3% of the health budget, it is necessary to pay special attention to the efficiency of the treatment. Taking into account that increase the percentage of patients in home peritoneal dialysis treatment represents a saving of 500 million euros to the SNS in 15 years, was in evidence the need for increasing the use of this technique.

In addition to an overview of the current situation of chronic renal failure and its treatment in Spain, the document contains proposals and regional experiences which were discussed in the Forum which includes the strategy of Chronic Renal disease of Balearic Islands, and the actions carried out in Castile and León, SpainComunidad Valenciana, Castile – La Mancha and Andalucia.

Home Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is a form of renal replacement therapy home used in patients with chronic renal failure. The Elimination of toxic substances is carried out through the peritoneal membrane and can be carried out manually or automated, at night, while sleeping. The only patient attends hospital to review each one or two months. This helps the patient continue with their work and personal life skills and gives you more freedom and privacy in their treatment.

Peritoneal dialysis presents:

-Social benefits, as it allows the patient to keep your work and personal life and provides you with greater independence, intimacy, autonomy and quality of life;

-advantages medical, because it is considered an excellent beginning of dialysis modality, is very suitable for patients who are on waiting list to receive a transplant, is recommended for all ages and, for its continuous nature, is the closest to the normal functioning of the kidneys.

-benefits for the national system of health, that its use would result in a saving of EUR 500 million in 15 years. According to an economic evaluation, the annual average cost per patient of treatment patients 46,659 euros in hemodialysis and 32.432 euros in home DP, i.e. hemodialysis is 44 per cent more expensive than the DP.
