La Fundación Reina Sofia recalls the importance of research for the early detection of Alzheimer’s.

Madrid, 2011-October the Foundation Queen Sofia, on the occasion of the international day of older people, he pointed out the importance of research for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, which affects about 360,000 people in Spain.

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia in people older than 65 years, and after this age, its prevalence increases exponentially. The prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and its early diagnosis is one of the main tools to deal with the disease.

Given that currently there is no treatment to delay or slow down the development of Alzheimer’s disease, it is urgent to increase the knowledge about its causes, diagnosis and treatment.

For this reason, the Foundation Reina Sofía, in their struggle that Alzheimer’s becomes a matter of priority in the political and social agenda and to increase investment in research, stresses the need to obtain maximum support and commitment by all social actors.

The Fundación Reina Sofia, founded in May 1977, is a joint entity of charitable and cultural character without spirit of profit and of a permanent nature. Since 1994, manages and promotes numerous projects, education and health, as well as social and humanitarian aid which benefited children, adults, immigrants, disabled persons and affected by natural disasters.

From 2002 to 2007, one of the main lines of action of the Foundation Queen Sofia has been Alzheimer’s project, whose main exponent is today the Queen Foundation Alzheimer Center Sofia, opened in 2007 in Vallecas, where they have carried out so far 27 research projectssix of them at the international level. It has also generated more than 60 scientific publications and 38 communications at congresses and scientific meetings.

During the year 2011, the Fundación Reina Sofía has intensified its work in the framework of the international year of Alzheimer, in order to contribute to raise awareness of the importance of investment in scientific research to advance the fight against Alzheimer’s and related neurodegenerative diseases.

Taken events just by the Foundation, on the occasion of this celebration, among the World Summit on research in Alzheimer’s disease, which was held in Madrid on 22 and 23 September.

In addition, the Foundation has launched the campaign Bank of memories ” . It’s a virtual space created to keep all the memories donated by anonymous people, familiar faces and people in the first phase of the disease.

Through the campaign, anyone can collaborate with this initiative by donating one of his favorite memories, through a photo, a video or write a letter. They will also have the possibility of collaborating sponsoring one of memories previously donated by another person, through a sum of money that will go entirely to Alzheimer disease research.
